I am currently working as an editor. However, I experienced working as a cook in restrunts, hospitals, and catering industry. Looking back now, I was connected to the Idea of Hala, since then.
At one point, few decades ago, I worked in a cafeteria at an auction site. More than 60% of the visitors to the venue were foreigners, including many Muslims (There were mosque in the venue as well). I remember many people asked me about the food we serve, the types of meat and whether they are Hala qualified.
At a certain time, the cafeteria becomes lively like a festival. Because the Indian restaurant next door to the venue served food for free. Indian dish, such as biryani, curry and sweet drinks were served to the visitors. Over 100 foreigners dressed in red turbans, garabayas and folk costumes gathered in the cafeteria, and everyone had a great time surrounding the same table. Now I learned about Muslim culture, it was a fast-starting Iftar.
Also, I remember that many participants were only eating curry from the Indian restrunt, eventhough there were choices of other food. As I study about Halal, I learned that they did not chose to eat curry, but they did not have a choise. I personally think that they wanted to try some of the Japanese food, if they had a chose. I still regret that moment, when I could not do anything because of the lack of information. “Inconvenience” of food is quite different based on their cultural background, and therefore, I understand now, that it is crucial to create an environment where all people can enjoy delicious meal, regardless of their backgrounds.

In Japan, Halal food is still a minority. Many people from Muslim background visit Japan, but they fell enconvininet about it. Japan Halal Business Association advocates in the halal business: HAVO (Halal, Organic, Vegetarian, Allergy).
The idea is to aim to create products and services that many people can eat and use, regardless of their religion and various backgrounds.
Seeking for delicious, safe and secure meal is commonly shared through the nations. The time demand us to find new ways of living that transcend borders and religions. We hope that Halal will help eliminate food inconvenience and contribute to the harmony of the world where you can respect, coexist, and co-prosper with a more liberal idea to eating and enjoying food.

Indian Bangladesh Dining Sunali is an Indian-Bangladesh restaurant located a 5-minute walk from the south exit of JR Otsuka Station.
Including chef’s specialty Indian curry you can enjoy kebab sandwiches and local food of Bangladesh.
Stores facing the railroad tracks are marked with green signs. From outside, you can see the kebab to-go counter.

You can choose your favorite curry from more than 10 kinds such as beans, chicken, mutton, keema, vegetable, and a set of Naan, salad and drink. Two-flavor curry set (Lunch time menu) is the most famous and suited to enjoy various kinds of curry.

There is also a daily plate of Bangla Amma, which is limited to 10 meals per day.
It is a set of Bangladeshi home cooking and looks like an Indian set meal Thali.
A great set with curry, rice, dessert, etc. served on one plate and various flavors can be enjoyed.

Sunali aims to be a restaurant that will make everyone around the world smile, across borders. All meals are Halal, but you can drink alcohol here.
According to the owner, Muslims are prohibited from drinking alcohol, so they did not really want to put them on the menu. But beer, highball, all-you-can-drink menus are available, because many people want to come in various scenes such as parties and celebrations.

They also decided to provide menus and so on. Even though the food menu includes Halal marks and signs, this is a kind of self-reported Halal. Sunali does not have a Halal certificate that is checked and issued by a certification organization.

An essential part of Indian food is grilling. They use the grill for meat/chicken dishes and baking naan.

Tandoor chicken is a standard dish that everyone loves, and also a very popular dish at Sunali.
Tandoor chicken in Sunali is marinated with spices such as yogurt and cumin, then grilled carefully in a kettle. It is surprisingly healthy because excess oil falls off during the cooking process.

There are a wide variety of tandoor dishes in Sunali. When you come in a group, we recommend a mixed-grill menu, where you can enjoy various flavors.
It is an excellent combination with naan, cheese naan, and biryani.

Fish curry is very famous in Bangladesh. Rapcha da curry with stewed bonito has a simple taste that is familiar to Japanese people.
In addition, there are rare fish dishes such as “Pangash curry” using freshwater fish called Pangash, similar to catfish. It is very rare to find, so you should challenge yourself!

A one-minute walk from Otsuka Mosque is the Ramanian Halal Food Shop, run by the owner of the Sunali Rahman.

The store is located on the first floor of a condominium in a residential area, so it may be difficult to find.
Indian and Bangladeshi ingredients are lined up in the shops, and nearby Muslims frequently come to shop.

There are plenty of items from frozen meats and sweets, seasonings, rice, beans, spices, snacks and children’s clothing for worship.
Dry food and spices are as affordable as Islamic Yokocho in Shin-Okubo, so be sure to stop by after eating at Sunali.
