A vegan cafe with reggae music
Exiting the ticket gates at Minamimachida Granberry Park Station on the Denentoshi Line is an outlet park. Many visitors come with small children and dogs. A bypass runs through the area, and new apartment buildings are constantly being built, making it a popular and livable neighborhood. 6889 Cafe is located five minutes from Minamimachida Granberry Park Station, heading toward a residential area. Look for the large 6889 Cafe sign. Continue further and you’ll find a lush green entrance at the end of a dead end. All of the menu items here are vegan.

As I opened the door, a sweet, incense-like aroma wafted through the interior, reggae music playing. Looking around, I was drawn to the wooden ornaments and Ethiopian flag displays. The cool vegan and reggae vibe sparked my curiosity. This time, I enjoyed a vegan lunch at 6889 Cafe.

Fried chicken, gyoza, and ramen
Now, let’s take a look at the food available at 6889cafe. I ordered the most popular dish: the soy meat fried chicken set meal. It comes with about 10 bite-sized pieces of fried chicken. The texture is unmistakably meaty. However, it’s lighter and less oily than meat, making it easy to munch on. The spiced, well-seasoned dish pairs well with chewy brown rice. This is a guilt-free way to eat a hearty lunch.

Next is the gyoza set meal. These gyoza are made without chives or garlic. Made with soy meat, they’re easy to eat and mild, making them a great choice for children. During lunchtime, a parent and child ordered gyoza and ate them with gusto.

6889cafe also offers a limited-edition weekly menu. A quick look at their Instagram reveals they have a wide selection of ramen options, including shio ramen, dandan noodles, and chilled ramen in the summer. They also offer colorful spice curry and desserts like soy milk soft serve ice cream. With a constantly changing menu, you can always enjoy your visit.

Put your own vegan experience on the menu
Now, let me introduce the owner of 6889cafe. She’s Ayumi Tomoi, a vegan for 20 years. She’s not the beard or dreadlocks you might imagine given the reggae and cafe atmosphere. Tomoi loves dogs and even created a booth in front of the cafe where customers can dine with their dogs.

The reggae and Ethiopian accessories that decorate the cafe were inspired by her husband. However, through this connection, Ethiopian coffee is available at the cafe and an Ethiopian coffee ceremony has also been held at events. We spoke to Tomoi about the cafe and her own vegan lifestyle.
After her own poor health prompted her entire family to eliminate animal products and focus on a plant-based diet. Because the whole family is vegan, she even ordered the hotel’s menu in advance for her daughter’s school trip, cooked alternative dishes, and shipped them frozen. She says she has enjoyed using her imagination to cook, wanting to provide her daughter with as many similar meals as possible. What’s also impressive is that she isn’t tied down by ingredient selection, but rather believes in “eating what I need at the moment.” She lives by listening to her body and getting the nutrients she needs.
The menu at 6889cafe allows you to experience the history of the Tomoi family’s food.

Recently, the cafe has also opened for bar time on Fridays and Saturdays. Come and enjoy vegan cuisine in a stylish atmosphere at this fun cafe.

I am originally from Kanazawa Ward, Yokohama City. After graduating from the Department of Nutrition at Kanagawa Prefectural University of Health and Welfare, I worked as a registered dietitian at a psychiatric hospital.
Since giving birth to my two daughters, I have been providing nutritional advice at home. I believe it is important for everyone to be able to enjoy rice-based meals and healthy snacks together. In addition to providing nutritional advice, I also currently sell biscotti made with pesticide-free rice bran at markets. I would like to introduce wonderful shops where vegans and non-vegans can enjoy dining together!
