A cafe based on the concept of “All For Green”

Just a five-minute walk from Hongo-Sanchome Station, you’ll find yourself strolling down a residential alleyway, where the “COFFEE” sign catches your eye.

The landmark

The landmark “COFFEE” sign.

Based on the concept of “All For Green,” we offer a new, sustainable coffee experience, avoiding materials that harm the environment or put strain on the body. Manager Shimizu explains his passion for this concept. “Large companies tend to have a one-way approach to sustainability, but I want to communicate the appeal of our coffee directly through a dialogue with our customers through our cafe.” Another charming aspect of this cafe is the warm hospitality of Shimizu and the other staff. They’re always chatting with you about unexpected things, remembering your names, and creating a cozy, homey atmosphere that makes you want to return.

Environmentally and physically friendly initiatives

All takeout materials are biodegradable, and all drinks and baked goods are plant-based, as part of a sustainable approach to minimizing the burden on the environment and our bodies. What particularly impressed me was the milk and coffee. There are three types of milk: 1) oat milk, 2) almond milk, and 3) pistachio milk, and all are plant-based. The reason they don’t offer the standard soy milk is because Shimizu-san wants customers to “try something different, something they wouldn’t normally order, since they’ve come all the way to this shop.” Indeed, when soy milk is available, many customers tend to order it without hesitation, rather than trying something new. Another attraction of this shop is that there is no additional charge for changing the milk. You can easily enjoy a different milk than usual. There are currently eight types of coffee to choose from, all of which are specialty coffees.

Eight Types of Specialty Coffee

Eight Types of Specialty Coffee

Specialty coffee is coffee that consumers (coffee drinkers) find delicious and satisfying. It is coffee that is cultivated with a consistent system, process, and quality control at every stage, from bean to cup (from seed to cup) (from the SCAJ website). Specialty coffee not only tastes delicious, but also has two other characteristics. The first is traceability. Traceability ensures that coffee is traceable from production to distribution, clarifying the distribution route and ensuring the reliability of the coffee’s quality. The second is fair trade. This is a system in which produced goods are traded at a fair price to protect the livelihoods of producers, primarily in developing countries. Therefore, specialty coffee is not only the highest quality coffee, but also sustainable coffee. All of the coffee used at Be green by KIELO COFFEE is specialty coffee.

If you come here, you should definitely try the carrot cake.

In addition to coffee, they also offer juices suitable for children.

We especially recommend their drip coffee, which allows you to fully enjoy the true flavor of coffee. I ordered an iced oat latte this time because I wanted to try a new milk. However, if you order a hot drip coffee, it’s served on a warm wooden tray in a cute, easy-to-grab ceramic cup. It also comes with a card to help you further enhance your experience. They currently offer six types of vegan and gluten-free baked goods, which change daily and seasonally, so we recommend checking their Instagram. Our top recommendation is their carrot cake.

A must-try carrot cake

The carrots used here are actually recycled carrot pomace from a nearby smoothie shop, produced during cold pressing (low-speed compression blending). Using what would otherwise be discarded, this is a sustainable and environmentally friendly option for both Be green by KIELO COFFEE and the smoothie shop. The carrot cake contains not only carrots, but also walnuts, raisins, and the spices cinnamon and nutmeg. The frosting (the cream on top of the carrot cake) is made with cashews and soy milk instead of cream cheese. I tried it myself, and the sweetness of the carrots, the moderate spiciness of the cinnamon and nutmeg, and the texture of the walnuts and raisins were so delicious that I found myself eating one carrot cake after another.

Be green by KIELO COFFEE is a place where vegans, vegetarians, and people with allergies can all share a fun cafe time and smile. In addition to dine-in, they also offer takeout and coffee beans for sale, so be sure to check it out.

After graduating from university with a registered dietitian training program, I worked in a hospital kitchen and at a contract food service company, where I created menus for nurseries and managed hygiene in student cafeterias.
In the workplace, I witnessed firsthand the large number of children with allergies and the reality that some children were unable to eat the same foods as everyone else.
I want people with dietary restrictions to be able to enjoy mealtimes. Through my articles, I aim to pursue my motto of "putting smiles on people's faces through food," reach many people, and be a source of strength for others.
